As a student at Venice High school in Los Angeles, Rob played lead alto in  the school's jazz big band, The Crescendos.  The long time music director, Bill Paney ran a tight ship and inspired many successful musicians during his tenure, including Marty Krystal, Pete Christleib, Alan Kaplan, John Clayton, and Jeff Clayton.

Rob studied privately with Bill Green, Don Menza, Warne Marsh, and Ralph Bowen.
